Workshop for K-6 Educators: Multisensory Learning and What Research Says About Movement and Learning

Basic Language ~ Orton-Gillingham Approach Training
In this 50-hour class, students will develop an understanding of language learning disabilities and learn how to effectively use the Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Instructional Approach. In addition to mastering the sound-symbol relationships of the English language, students will gain an in-depth understanding of the etymology and lexicon associated with English, a skill essential to reading instruction. Students will learn the essential elements of a successful multisensory instruction approach, how to administer and interpret diagnostic assessments in preparing individualized lesson plans, and all the necessary knowledge to prepare and deliver effective Orton-Gillingham lessons.
Three options:
Dates: June 18-29, 2012 (Monday - Friday)

Multisensory Math Methods
In this 50-hour class, teachers and tutors will develop an understanding of how students learn mathematics and how to apply a multisensory approach to teaching mathematics. Participants will learn the essential elements of a successful multisensory instructional approach, how to administer and interpret diagnostic assessments in preparing individualized lesson plans, and all the necessary knowledge to prepare and deliver effective math instruction. Prerequisite for this course is a Bachelor’s degree.

Educator Training and Workshops
- Our summer course is specifically adapted to accommodate the needs of teachers. In addition to increasing your understanding of how learning-disabled students learn language, this course aims to provide you the skills and tools to differentiate instruction and teach every child in today’s full-inclusion classrooms.
- Customizable on-site professional development workshops are available to schools interested in implementing multisensory instructional techniques in their classrooms.

Become a DII Multisensory Education Specialist!
Applicant Requirements:
- Bachelors Degree
- Previous experience working with children and/or adults, in a classroom, or in the field of education, is preferred
- Successful completion of the DII Orton-Gillingham Basic Training and practicum
Orton-Gillingham Basic Training, Course Content:
Participants will . . .
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the learning disability, dyslexia
- Learn the philosophy and teaching techniques involved in the Orton- Gillingham approach
- Learn the components needed to conduct an Orton-Gillingham lesson including:
- Drills (Visual, Auditory, and Blending)
- Reinforcements of learning to achieve mastery
- Reading
- Spelling
- Learn the essential elements of a successful multisensory teaching approach.
- Master the sound-symbol relationship in English, rules for spelling, and for syllable division.
- Learn how to administer and interpret simple preliminary diagnostic assessments in preparing individualized lessons plans, and learn to interpret more extensive professional educational testing.
