DII is an IRS 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to serve children, adolescents, and adults with specific reading/language disabilities. Established in 1989, we provide individualized, one-on-one instructional services that are specific to the needs of each individual. For over 20 years, these important services have enabled individuals to reach their full potential by learning skills to manage the challenges of dyslexia.
Each year we have students who are in need financial assistance to start or continue in these programs. As many as 65% of our students must receive this valued financial assistance to get the instruction that they so desperately need. Your contribution to our fund will help us this year provide over 4000 hours of one on one and group instruction to more than 100 students!
Programs Which Benefit From Scholarship Funding
- Individualized Tutoring: DII provides one-on-one effective literacy instruction to approximately 150 individuals with dyslexia annually through Wells Outreach Education Program. Through this program, students increase their knowledge and understanding of phonics and spelling. They gain improved learning skills and habits, improved progress in school grade reports, better conduct, and social and homework skills. In addition, they show improved self discipline and confidence, and most rewarding—the ability to read independently.
- Summer Academic Intervention and Enrichment: For 24 years, Camp Delafield has provided daily tutoring and recreational enrichment to 60 youth with dyslexia ages 6-11 each summer. Recreational activities that improve social skills, fine and gross motor skills, and communication capabilities complement the rigorous academic program (80 hours of one on one and small group tutoring).
Recent Significant Accomplishments
DII is proud to report that in 2013:
Wells Outreach Education Program students achieved an average 2.4 grade level increase in core literacy skills.
Camp Delafield participants increased core literacy skills by 1.5 grade levels in four weeks over the summer.
